Description:
From an estate in Connecticut, a table screen consisting of a tablet of deep translucent resin etched with a phoenix design held in an elaborately carved heavy rosewood base. There is also a beveled skirt bracketing the legs on both sides with open scrollwork and lotus blossoms. The screen is 5/8" thick and beveled around the edges, glowing a deep translucent oxblood color when held to the light (see detail). The edges have been intricately carved with openwork leaves and flowers, framing a central rectangular section showing the phoenix flying over the rising sun holding a crysanthemum in his mouth. The back side of the panel has been left smooth and unengraved.
