Description:
A very fine pair of signed bronze Nio guardian figures from early Meiji period Japan. The Nio's fierce and threatening appearance is said to ward off evil spirits; one figure stands with his mouth open, signifying the beginning of life the other with his mouth closed, signifying the end. In excellent condition with some wear on each base.
